The origin of the compass is a Chinese invention although it is said that the Chinese marked the south and it was in Europe, about the year 1300 when the compass was invented, which marks the north as the current ones.
There are different compasses, basically for bearing direction and orientation at ground level and maritime navigation compasses which are generally suspended on a wooden base.
