Mercury barometers

The first barometers that were used were the mercury or Torricelli barometers, today they are still in force.

They are so named because these barometers consist of containers (usually glass tubes closed at one end, about 100 cm long) that are filled with mercury, and are used to calculate atmospheric pressure.

Torricelli was the discoverer and inventor of this system for measuring atmospheric pressure using a column of mercury. Since then this barometer has been named after him.

In this case, the reduction of the atmospheric pressure at sea level has to be done manually, using the plate with an equivalent scale on the top.
